Carbon Equivalent Formula

Refer Carbon Equivalent Value chart to check the Weldability of alloys. For engineers it is necessary to know the carbon equivalent value (CEV) specially for the welding process. Carbon Equivalent Calculator can help to give an accurate idea to the welders and project engineers.

Aesteiron has been dealing in Industrial piping material since 2007. Aesteiron Steels LLP is a largest manufacturer of carbon steel pipe in India, Their team also has expertise in all types of welding works like Pipe Spool. You can contact Aesteiron for any kind of Steel Pipe or Plate welding work.

Carbon Equivalent (CE) Value Material Weldability
Up to 0.35 Excellent
0.36-0.40 Very Good
0.41-0.45 Good
0.46-0.50 Fair
Over 0.50 Excellent Weldability Poor

Carbon Equivalent Formula

The formula of International Institute of Welding (I.I.W.) is used in the above CE Calculator. To get the accurate results there should be a minimum 0.18% in carbon value. Here are two Carbon Equivalent Formulas of I.I.W.

1st Carbon Equivalent Formula

Use this formula for more than 0.18% carbon content

  • CEV (%) = %C + %Mn/6 + (%Cu + %Ni)/15 + (%Cr + %Mo + %V)/5

2nd Carbon Equivalent Formula

This formula must be used with less than 0.18% carbon content

  • CEV (%) = %C + %Si/30 + (%Mn + %Cu + %Cr)/20 + %Ni/60 + %Mo/15 + %V/10 + 5(%B)
