What is SA 240 type 304?
It is a standard specification for chromium and chromium-nickel stainless steel plate, sheet and strip for general and pressure vessels application. It contains both chromium 18% to 20% and nickel 8% to 10.5% as the main non-iron constituents. It is an austenitic stainless steel which is less thermally and electrically conductive compared to carbon steel. It is magnetic, but less magnetic compared to other steel. It has a high corrosion resistance compared to other regular steel and is widely used because of the ease which it is formed into various shapes.
SA 240 type 304 Sheet offers excellent resistance to a wide range of atmospheric environments and also to corrosive media. It is subjected to pitting and crevice corrosion in warm chloride environments and to stress corrosion cracking above about 60 °C. It is pitting corrosion resistant in water with up to about 400 mg/L chlorides at ambient temperatures, reducing to about 150 mg/L at 60 °C.

The distinction between stainless steel 304 sheet and plate is as equally ambiguous as a number of other terms are used to describe steel product forms. Generally speaking, a stainless steel 304 sheet is a thinner item of metal that has been cut from a continuously rolled coil. As such, it is less than 1mm, or up to 25mm, in thickness. Stainless steel 304 plate is a thicker item of metal that has been produced as a single item. Its thickness can be up to 150mm or more, but also as low as 2mm from certain manufacturers.
Therefore, it’s quite possible that certain thickness items could be manufactured through either process and described differently, although both are in the hot rolled condition.
Stainless steel 304 plate is typically used in machines, structural sections and larger fabrications, whereas stainless steel 304 sheet is used in producing appliances and enclosures.

Stainless 304 Plate has excellent corrosion resistance and good resistance to intergranular corrosion. Of oxidizing acids, such as concentration ≤ 65% below the boiling temperature of nitric acid, with strong corrosion resistance. Most of the alkali solution and organic and inorganic acids also has good corrosion resistance.

It can be processed boardly in tube, wire, tape, type of product, for the manufacture of cold heading, deep drawing, deep drawing forming parts. 304 Stainless Steel Sheet provides better low temperature performance at -180 ℃ condition, strength, elongation, and the area reduction rate is also very good.
