Inconel 601 are mostly used in the chemical and petrochemical industries. The material belongs to a family of Inconel alloys which are made up of chromium and nickel primarily. These are called superalloys and they possess some special qualities. The alloys in particular are resistant to alkalis and are therefore used in alkalis production as well. There are Alloy 601 equivalent grades of the superalloy such as the Inconel 600. Some grades might be used interchangeably with the application requirements. The Inconel 601 UNS N06601 contains chromium and that allows the material to be corrosion resistant to most acids. The nickel component provides the strength and high temperature resistance. The material is nonmagnetic and could be welded well. The machining on this material has to be performed by special tools and methods because of the solution annealed production methods and rapid hardening characteristics. The designation DIN 2.4851 marks the 601 inconel alloys. It has good creep resistance and oxidation resistance. The oxidation resistance is very high due the formation of an oxide layer on the exposed surface. The thick oxide layer does not allow contact with oxidizing agents so that further oxidation is prevented fully. The Inconel 601 machinability is less than other types of metals because of the rapid hardening of the material. However, slow but strong machining processes are there to do the machining with less number of passing. The 601 Inconel material is used in muffles, flame shields and annealing tubes of heat treat furnaces and fixtures. The high temperature resistance property allows the material to be used in high temperature applications. The material could be used with other grades of Inconel in aerospace, chemical and petrochemical industries. Food processing plants, power stations, heat exchangers and other applications are also possible. The Inconel 601 suppliers sell different products such as pipes, bars, sheets and fittings from this material.
