INTERNATIONAL MATERIAL GRADE COMPARISON TABLE

FERRITIC STAINLESS STEEL, is a high chromium, magnetic stainless steel that has low carbon content. It is known for good ductility, resistance to corrosion & stress corrosion cracking, ferritic steels are commonly used in automotive applications, kitchenware & industrial equipment.

MARTENSITIC STAINLESS STEEL, are characterized by high strength and hardness in the heat treated condition. It is magnetic in both the annealed and hardened condition. Martensitic steel are commonly used in surgical and dental instruments, springs, scissors, industrial blades, cutlery, cookware, etc.

PRECIPITATION HARDENING STAINLESS STEEL, are chromium and nickel containing steels that provide an optimum combination of the properties properties of martensitic and austenitic steel. It is known for ability to gain high strength through heat treatment and also has corrosion resistance. The most well known precipitation hardening steel is 17-4PH.

AUSTENITIC STAINLESS STEEL, are the most common and familiar type of stainless steel. They are most easily recognized as non magnetic. It is extremely formable and weldable and can be successfully used from cryogenic temperatures to the red hot temperatures of furnaces and jet engines. It contains about 16 to 25% chromium and also contain nitrogen in solution, both of which contribute to their high corrosion resistance.

SUPER AUSTENITIC STAINLESS STEEL, exhibit great resistance to chloride pitting & crevice corrosion because of high molybdenum content  and nitrogen additions and the higher nickel content ensures better resistance to stress corrosion versus the 300 series. These steel approach the performance of highly corrosion resistant nickel based alloy at a significant lower cost. It is magnetic & present a good weldability & excellent formability. It is useful for pulp & paper, waste water treatment, fertilizer & chemical applications etc.

DUPLEX STAINLESS STEEL, are called “duplex” because they have two phase microstructure consisting of grains of ferritic and austentic stainless steel. When duplex Steel is melted  it solidifies from the liquid phase to completely ferritic structure. As the metal cools to room temperature, about half of the ferritic grains transforms to austenitic grains. The result is a microstructure of roughly 50% austenite and 50% ferrite. Duplex steel provides features such as toughness & durability, corrosion resistance, stress corrosion cracking resistance etc.

SUPER DUPLEX STAINLESS STEEL, grades has enhanced pitting & crevice corrosion resistance when compared with 300 series austenitic stainless steel or conventional duplex alloys. It can be attributed to the enhanced levels of chromium, molybdenum and nitrogen found in these material. Alloy 2507 is the most common “super” duplex grade.

NICKEL ALLOY, is a non ferrous metals with high strength and toughness, excellent corrosion resistance and superior elevated temperature properties. It is a bright silver white metallic element of the iron group and is hard, malleable and ductile. It is tough and corrosion resistant and provides an excellent base for developing specialized alloys.

TITANIUM ALLOY, is a metal that contain a mixture of titanium and other chemical element. Such alloys have very high tensile strength and toughness. It is light in weight, have extraordinary corrosion resistance and the ability to withstand extreme temperatures. However, the high cost of both raw materials and processing limit their use to military applications, aircraft, spacecraft, bicycles, medical devices, jewelry, highly stressed components such as connecting rods on expensive sports car and some premium sports equipment and consumer electronics.

CUPRO-NICKEL, is an alloy of copper that contains nickel and strengthening elements such as iron & manganese. Despite its high copper  content, CuNi is silver in colour, due to nickel’s high electronegativity causing copper’s d-shell electron loss. Due to the specific properties of nickel and copper alloys, they are applied in various domains of industry e.g. coin and medal minting, armaments manufacture, desalination materials, marine engineering, and extensively used in the chemical, petrochemical and electrical industries. Cupronickel is highly resistant to corrosion in seawater. For this reason, it is used for piping, heat exchanger and condensers in seawater systems, marine hardware, and sometimes for the propellers, propeller shafts, and hulls of premium tugboats, fishing boats and other working boats. Another common use of cupronickel is in silver-coloured modern-circulated coins. A typical mix is 75% copper, 25% nickel (a proportion of 3:1), and a trace amount of manganese. In the past, true silver coins were debased with cupronickel.

ZIRCONIUM, is a chemical element with symbol Zr and atomic number 40. Zirconium is a lustrous, greyish-white, soft, ductile, malleable metal that is solid at room temperature, though it is hard and brittle at lesser purities. Zirconium is highly resistant to corrosion by alkalis, acids, salt water and other agents. However, it will dissolve in hydrochloric and sulfuric acid, especially when fluorine is present.  Alloy with zinc are magnetic at less than 35 K. The melting point of zirconium is 1855 °C (3371 °F), and the boiling point is 4371 °C (7900 °F). Zirconium has an electronegativity of 1.33 on the Pauling scale. Zirconium is mainly used as a refractory and opacifier, although small amounts are used as an alloying agent for its strong resistance to corrosion.

It has various different properties like strength, malleability, visual attractiveness etc. Alloys are attractive due to its improved quality for make utilizing the pure elemental metals.
